Blackwood Hunting Group Talk to us

For Southeast Texas landowners

Hogs tearing up your land? We'll hunt them at no cost to you.

Blackwood Hunting Group is a private hog hunting operation based in north Houston. We bring light hog management through hunting to family cattle, hay, and rice land in Liberty, Chambers, Hardin, Jefferson, and Tyler counties. Four named hunters. Hogs only. A written report after every visit.

No fees, ever. We call you back within a day.

  • No cost. Not now, not later.
  • Hogs only. We don't hunt your deer or birds.
  • No guests. Only our four named hunters.
  • You're insured. Named on our liability policy.
  • End it any time. A text is enough.

You already know

Hogs don't take a season off.

Rooted pasture. Torn up hay meadows. Wallows in the stock tank and ruts along the levee. Broken fence where a sounder pushed through. By the time you see the damage, they've been working that ground for weeks.

Most landowners we talk to have tried something already. A neighbor's nephew with a rifle. A hunter who showed up once and never came back. A lease hunter who only cared about deer. What's usually missing is someone who shows up on a schedule, tells you what they found, and treats your place better than their own.

That's what we do.

What you get

Everything a landowner should expect. Nothing you have to pay for.

  • Zero cost.

No fees, no charges, no catch. We cover every cost of the operation ourselves.

  • A Hog Activity Assessment.

Three to four weeks of trail cameras and a sign walk before we hunt, then a written read on what you're dealing with.

  • A written report after every visit.

Within 72 hours: who was there, when, what we saw, what we took, and what's next.

  • Liability insurance that names you.

Our policy lists you as an additional insured.

  • A short agreement.

Two pages in plain English. You can end it at any time.

  • A trapper referral when you need one.

If your hogs are more than hunting can handle, we'll tell you and connect you with a trapper.

The honest answer

So what's the catch?

There isn't one, and we understand why you'd ask.

We're hunters. Good private land to hunt hogs on is hard to find around Houston, and we'd rather earn a place on your property than pay for a crowded lease. You get a small, careful, insured crew and real information about your hogs. We get somewhere to hunt.

We don't charge you, we don't sell meat, and we don't sell hunts to anyone. No money changes hands in either direction.

How it works

Paper first. Then cameras. Then hunting.

Nobody sets foot on your land until the agreement is signed and you have our certificate of insurance in hand.

  1. A phone call.

You tell us about your land and what the hogs are doing. We tell you how we operate. No pressure either way.

  2. A walk of the property.

We ride or walk it with you: boundaries, gates, livestock, houses, roads, and anywhere you don't want us.

  3. A two-page agreement.

You sign a short access agreement and get a certificate of insurance naming you. If someone else holds the hunting rights on your place, we get their written OK first.

  4. The Hog Activity Assessment.

Three to four weeks of trail cameras and a sign walk. We learn where the hogs travel, when they move, and roughly how many there are.

  5. Your assessment report.

A written read on what you have and whether hunting pressure fits the problem, or whether you need a trapper too.

  6. Regular visits, with a report after each one.

We hunt on a steady schedule, day and night, and send you a written report within 72 hours of every visit.

The Hog Activity Assessment

Before we hunt, we find out what you're dealing with.

Every property starts the same way. We put out trail cameras, walk the sign, and map where the damage is. After three to four weeks, you get a written assessment with a clear level:

  1. Level 1, Light. Occasional sign. Hunting pressure fits.
  2. Level 2, Moderate. One or two groups patterned, damage in a few spots. Hunting pressure fits, and we watch the trend.
  3. Level 3, Heavy. Several groups, recurring damage. We keep hunting and recommend adding a trapper. Referral included.
  4. Level 4, Beyond hunting. More than hunting can handle. We recommend a trapper as the main tool. Referral included. We keep hunting only if you want us to.

We update the assessment every quarter, and every visit report tells you where things stand.

Sample report. Your reports show your property, your cameras, and your numbers.

How we operate

The easiest guests you've ever had.

  • Named hunters only. Up to four, each signed, trained, and listed with our insurer. No guests. No exceptions.

  • Hogs only. We don't hunt deer, birds, or anything else.

  • Gates as found. Every gate left the way we found it. Roads and fields left without ruts.

  • Nobody surprised at night. Before every night hunt, we call the sheriff's office non-emergency line and text you the time window.

  • No one else in the way. If anyone we weren't told about is on the property, we stop until they're clear.

  • Clean and discreet. No field dressing on your property. Carcasses handled out of sight of roads and neighbors.

  • Your privacy. No photos that identify your property or your family without your written permission. Trail cameras aimed away from houses and work areas.

  • Bad news travels fast. If anything goes wrong, you get a phone call the same day, before the written report.

Straight talk

What hunting can do, and what it can't.

Hunting puts steady pressure on hogs, keeps sounders moving, and takes animals off your land on a regular basis. Paired with good records, it tells you exactly what's happening on your property.

Here's what it can't do on its own: wipe out a hog population. Texas Parks and Wildlife estimates that 66 to 70 percent of a wild pig population has to be taken every year just to keep it from growing. Hunting alone rarely reaches that.

So we don't promise fewer hogs or less damage. We promise to show up, hunt with purpose, and tell you the truth in writing. When your assessment says hunting isn't enough, we'll say so and connect you with a trapper.

Who we are

A small operation, run by the owner.

I'm Ryan DesChamps. I live in north Houston and [OWNER BACKGROUND: one or two plain sentences on hunting history, ties to the area, or why this matters to you]. I started Blackwood Hunting Group because good landowners deserve better than hunters who show up unannounced, leave gates open, and never tell them what happened.

We keep the operation small on purpose. Four hunters, a few properties, and the same people on your land every time. We only take on as many properties as we can visit on a regular schedule, so if we say yes, we mean it.

Questions

Questions landowners ask us.

Why would you do this for free?

Because we want a good place to hunt hogs, and we'd rather earn it than buy it. No money changes hands in either direction. We cover all of our own costs.

Will you get rid of my hogs?

We won't promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. We'll hunt your property on a steady schedule and tell you honestly what we're seeing. If the problem is bigger than hunting can handle, we'll tell you and refer you to a trapper.

What about my liability if someone gets hurt?

Texas law limits a landowner's liability to people who hunt on his land when he charges them nothing. This agreement involves no payment in either direction, so it does not change your standing under that law. Our insurance also names you as an additional insured.

Who exactly will be on my land?

Only our named roster hunters, up to four people. You'll have their names before anyone comes out, and every visit report says who was there and when. No guests, friends, or family, ever.

Someone already has a deer lease on my place. Does that matter?

We only hunt hogs, so we don't compete with a deer or duck lease. But we won't set foot on the property until the lease holder gives us a written OK. If they say no, we pass.

Do you hunt at night?

Yes, because that's when hogs move, especially in summer. Before every night hunt, we call the county sheriff's non-emergency line and text you the time window. Nobody is surprised.

What happens to the hogs you take?

We never field dress on your property. How carcasses are handled is agreed in writing before we start and kept out of sight of roads and neighbors. We don't sell meat.

What if you damage a gate, fence, or livestock?

You get a phone call the same day, before the written report.

I live in Houston and rarely get out to the property. Does that work?

That's one of the best fits. You'll get a written report after every visit, so you'll know more about what's happening on your land than you do now.

How do I end the agreement?

Tell us. A text is enough. No notice period, no penalty.

Where do you hunt?

Private rural land in Liberty, Chambers, Hardin, Jefferson, and Tyler counties, generally within about 75 minutes of north Houston. We don't hunt in subdivisions, city limits, or anywhere discharge isn't clearly legal.

Will you post photos of my property?

No. We don't post hunting photos publicly, and we never share photos that identify your property or family without your written permission.

Can I, or a friend, hunt with you?

No. We are not accepting new hunters, and we do not sell hunts. This page is for landowners only.
